What is Emotional Intelligence?

Developing strong "people skills"

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions. Some researchers suggest that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while others claim it is an inborn characteristic.

However,  according to  Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer " they defined emotional intelligence as, "the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions" (1990).

Studies show that businesses that had hired staff based on emotional intelligence saw their performance were far greater and has also been significantly lower staff turnover among the group chosen for their emotional intelligence. For individuals, EI allows them to develop strong people skills resulting in better working environment, career prospects and family life.
